Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a Web page in search engines via the "natural" or unpaid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, news search, etc.
Improve Your Club Website SEO
Search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and others all use extremely complex algorithms to "crawl" the web and pull results for a search. The order in which the results appear is based on hundreds of different variables. However, there are many things you can do as a webmaster that will help improve your site's SEO. This article will help you with some of the basics. More information can be found, ironically, by searching "SEO" on Google or any other search engine.
NOTE: This article is written under the assumption that your club has purchased a domain. The temporary domain given to your club during the registration process for the Club Management System is NOT configured to show in search engine results.
If your club still needs to purchase a domain, we recommend using www.Hover.com. Domains can typically be purchased from Hover for $15/year.
After purchasing a domain, send an email to email@example.com stating your club name and the newly purchased domain information so that it can be configured properly to work with the Club Management System.
Add Your URL to Google
This process requires a Google account. If you do not have a Google account, you can sign up for one here. Google accounts are free and only take a few minutes to register.
- Browse to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url. If you aren't already signed in to Google, you will be prompted to do so.
- Type your site's full URL in the text box. (e.g. http://www.mykiwanisclub.org)
- Type in the code words that are listed in the box. This is a common security practice for Web pages.
Click the Submit Request button.
You should get a confirmation message that says:
Content, Content, Content!
One of the best things you can do as the webmaster for your site is make sure your club website has plenty of relevant content. The more places on your site that have information about your club, the better. It is just as important, however, to make sure the content on your page stays fresh and up-to-date. News stories, events, images, etc. all need to be updated every month or so at minimum.
This is one of the many factors that search engines look at when deciding where to place your website in the results. If your site has had the same content for 3 months, it will be less likely to show up in the top results when compared to a similar site that has fresh new content.
Use Links to Increase Traffic
Another factor for website SEO is links. The more places online that have a link to your website the better. For example, if your club has a Facebook page and you place your club website link on the Facebook page, you are helping your website SEO. The link on the Facebook page is adding to how many times a search engine is seeing your URL listed on the Web. At the same time, you're also creating more ways for people to access your site.
Meta tags are information inserted into the "head" area of your Web pages. Information in the head area of your Web pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers. Instead, meta information in this area is used to communicate information that a human visitor may not be concerned with, e.g. keywords for search engines.
The head section of the HTML code for your club website is not accessible with the Club Management System. However, no need to worry. The developers at Club Resource do this work for you at the time of registering.
Last but not least, be patient. It can take several weeks before you see any noticeable change in the way your club website displays in the results of a search engine. It's typically a slow moving process, but if you follow the guidelines of this article, your website's SEO will improve.
